The festive season in Edinburgh is magical — and one of the best ways to soak it in is by wandering through illuminated trails, grand projections, and twinkling gardens. From the castles to zoos, here’s your guide to the top light shows to put on your list this year.


Castle of Light — Edinburgh Castle

When: Selected evenings from late November to early January


Tickets:

  • Adults: £24

What to expect:

Castle of Light returns to Edinburgh Castle for its sixth year, brighter and bolder than ever. Scotland’s iconic fortress comes alive with the UK’s largest annual projection show. Wander amongst dazzling displays, meet the Ice Queen in her frozen realm, and watch as the mighty dragon lights up the night sky. Enjoy immersive projections and interactive installations throughout the castle grounds.

Christmas at the Botanics — Royal Botanic Garden


When: Selected evenings from 20th November through 30th December 2025


Tickets:

  • Adults: £19 (£25 peak)

  • Children: £14 (£18.50 peak)


What to expect:

A beautifully curated light trail winding through the gardens — lit trees, sparkling tunnels, reflections, interactive installations, and seasonal soundscapes.

Illuminations at Five Sisters Zoo


When: Selected dates between Friday 21st November and 23rd December


Tickets:

  • Adults: £21.50

  • Children: £11.95 (slightly higher on weekends)


What to expect:


A wildlife twist on festive lights. Stroll through the amazing illuminated paths, projections, and decorative displays — combining nature and sparkle. There are also food stalls, festive market booths, and fun rides.

Edinburgh Zoo’s Giant Lanterns


When: Selected dates from Friday 14th November 2025 – Sunday 22nd February 2026


Tickets:

  • Adults: £23

  • Children: £17

  • Under 3: Free


What to expect:

An underwater-themed lantern trail featuring hundreds of larger-than-life illuminated sculptures — think glimmering jellyfish, sea turtles, whales, and more. There’s a Lanterns Grotto inside the Budongo Trail (select evenings in December) where kids can meet Santa. Quiet/low-sensory nights are planned for 17th December 2025 and 6th February 2026.

Go Ape Sundown Adventures — Dalkeith Country Park


When: Selected evenings from 28th November to 30th December 2025


Tickets: £31.95 per person


What to expect:

Tackle high ropes under glowing lights and illuminated zip wires over the River Esk.

Tips Before You Go

  • Book early & check dates — many of these are ticketed and run only on certain evenings.

  • Dress warmly & wear comfy shoes — trails can be over grass, paths, or uneven ground.

  • Arrive early — to avoid queues, get photos, and soak in the atmosphere.
